Hints & Tips For Booklets

What size of booklets do we print?

Our standard booklet sizes include:

  • A4
  • A5
  • Small Square (148 x 148mm)
  • Large Square (210 x 210mm)

However we can also print Custom Size Booklets on request.  Please contact us for a quotation to suit your requirements.

What type of binding is best?

Although it could be aesthetic or budget preferences, the type of printing best for you will to a degree depend on the number of pages. So saddle stitching (also known as stapled, as it uses 2 staples to bind the spine) would be a good option for fewer pages or magazine style booklets, whereas a high class finish with 40+ pages will lend itself better to a perfect bound finish. You might want something that sits very flat eg. a staff handbook or manual, which would indicate a wire bound option is best for you. Again, feel free to just contact us for a chat before you make your decision.

Is landscape or portrait best?

Again this depends on the nature of the item and its contents. Say for example you are producing a Look Book that requires a lot of big glossy imagery. In this instance a landscape layout might be best. Something that is more copy-heavy and less reliant on visual bells and whistles would be fine in portrait presentation.

What paper is best?

SELF COVER BOOKLETS

This means that the cover and inner pages of the booklet use the same weight / gsm of paper throughout. Paper weights for self cover range from 150 to 250gsm. Perfect for low cost magazines and hand outs.

HEAVIER COVER BOOKLETS

If you’re looking for a truly high-end finish that oozes class and quality, then you might opt for a heavier gsm, or thickness for the cover eg. 300 – 400gsm. With the option of adding matt or gloss lamination on the cover. For saddle stitched booklets, inner pages are best from 90gsm to 150gsm in weight when using a heavier cover. If you would like to promote a high class product, you will then probably be best to select a perfect bound finish. You must have a minimum of 40 pages to use the perfect bound option. Inner page weight recommeded for perfect bound booklets would be 120 – 170gsm depending on the number of pages.

If you are printing a visual booklet with a large number of photographs, then you may want a silk or gloss paper finish as this will really help make the images pop.  Or for a more rustic look, opt for uncoated paper as it gives a drier finish, albeit the colours will be a little more muted than a gloss finish.

Page count

It is a common mistake to forget all about the cover page and back outside page. These are fairly essential though so be sure to include them in your count! Your choice of bind will dictate the number of page multiples. So for instance, saddle stitched works in multiples of four whereas perfect bound works in multiples of two. So a 58-page option would be OK for a perfect bound solution, but it wouldn’t work for saddle stitched.
